ANSI/ISA-5.1
ANSI/ISA-5.1-2024 provides a standardized system for instrumentation and control symbols and identification. ISA describes its purpose as providing a uniform way to depict and identify instruments, devices and functions in measurement and control systems.
What a tag communicates
A tag commonly combines letters identifying measured or initiating variable and function with a loop or sequence number. Site conventions can add area, unit or equipment structure. The important requirement is consistent interpretation across documents and systems.
P&ID role
A piping and instrumentation diagram represents process equipment, piping and relevant instrumentation/control relationships. It is not the same as a wiring diagram, loop drawing or control-system logic description.
Loop documentation
Loop drawings and associated records can connect field device, terminals, barriers, I/O channel and control-system tag. They are especially useful when a wrong value could originate at several points in the signal path.
Keep identifiers synchronized
If CMMS, calibration software, DCS and drawings use different IDs for the same instrument, history fragments. Cross-system governance of tags is therefore as important as the symbol library itself.
