HART, WirelessHART and networked field instrumentation

Digital communication lets instruments expose more than one process value, but it also introduces configuration, network and asset-management responsibilities.

HART

FieldComm Group describes HART as bidirectional communication between intelligent field instruments and host systems. It is widely used to access device configuration, status and diagnostic data alongside conventional process measurement architectures.

WirelessHART

WirelessHART extends HART technology with wireless mesh networking for process-automation applications. Mesh routing allows devices to forward messages through neighboring devices to a gateway.

Device information

Smart-device data can include tag, range, units, status, diagnostics and device identity. This is useful only when host systems maintain consistent asset identifiers and configuration governance.

Gateways and host systems

A gateway or asset-management system can aggregate device data and present it to engineering, maintenance or control applications. It becomes another operational dependency and should be monitored and backed up appropriately.

Security and lifecycle

Networked instruments should be included in OT asset inventory, access control, configuration backup and lifecycle planning. Connectivity should be purposeful rather than added merely because a device supports it.
